These Aren't Your Grandma's Cloth Diapers

When I tell people that I'm using cloth diapers on the twins, I get mixed reactions. Some are intrigued, some are grossed out, and others picture diapers soaking in my toilets. Now, most people are not far off when they have those feelings. My mom used cloth diapers on my sister and I, and my memory is that of cloth diapers soaking in the toilet.

I first used cloth diapers on Andrew. We lived in Atlanta at the time, in a small apartment. We did not have our own laundry facilities so I opted for a diaper service. Every week I would get a big bag of clean diapers, and I would give the delivery person a big bag of stinky diapers. The service cost about what disposables would have cost, but I felt better about minimizing chemicals on my baby's soft skin, and there was some environmental benefit as well. The problem was that a week worth of dirty diapers in a small apartment got pretty yucky. Once Andrew was a year old, we switched to disposable diapers.

William wore only disposable diapers...we moved three times in his first year...I wanted to keep things as simple as possible.

When Owen came on the scene I researched cloth diapers again. I was amazed at how many things had changed since I diapered Andrew. Andrew had handy velcro diaper covers, but they were boring. Pins were still the fastener of choice for cloth diapers, which always made me nervous. All of a sudden the internet was full of cloth diapering websites and storefronts with advice for washing and even making your own cloth diapers. I decided on a stash of infant sized unbleached prefolds (these are the type of cloth diapers that diaper services use...though theirs are bleached). The unbleached prefolds are an oatmeal color, resist staining and wash up very soft. They are super absorbent as well. I also bought quite a few fitted diapers. Fitted cloth diapers look more like a disposable diaper and have velcro or snap fasteners. They are easy to put on and hold all kinds of messes. With Owen I even purchased some All in One diapers, which are fitted diapers with a cover built in on the outside. These are perfect for dads and babysitters, as they require only one step to put on.

When ethan came on the scene I had all of Owen's diapers, so I did not even have to research or shop! The diapers were ready to go! When Ethan potty trained, I handed down all of his diapers to a friend with a new baby.

When I found out I was pregnant this past summer, I began researching diapers again...it had been seven years since I had shopped for cloth diapers, and a lot of the websites had changed, as well as the more popular diapers. I decided to research and choose one company to go to for all of my diapering needs...this is much easier than purchasing from five different companies. For the most part, pricing is consistent across the board, so service and selection are most important. After reading several reviews, I selected Cotton Babies. Cotton babies has excellent service reviews , an easy to navigate website, lightning fast (and free!) shipping and great selection. They manufacture their own line of diapers and covers as well as carry a wide selection of other companies' products!

I placed an initial order for 3 dozen infant prefolds and 4 newborn sized velcro covers, as well as some snappi fasteners (these replace diaper pins!). My order was around $100...and is enough to keep the twins diapered for about 2 and a half days before doing laundry. Since then I have added four Bum Genius fitted diapers for use at night (they are super soft and thick and absorbent.), I also invested in four PINK Flip diaper covers. The Flip covers are great in that they are one-size covers. They snap down to fit smaller babies (even Emily at barely six pounds) and will fit babes up to 30 pounds. I love that I can buy one cover that will fit my girls all through their diapering years...even chubby William was potty trained by 30 pounds!

Both the Bum Genius diaper and the Flip cover are made by Cotton Babies, and they run specials on their items regularly, it pays to get on their mailing list. The Flip covers come in 8 really cute colors in both brights and pastels. I am planning on ordering some more in a pale yellow and green soon, now that I know how well they fit and work. My best advice is to only buy one or two of a new item to see how well they work for you before you invest in large amounts .

As far as laundering diapers, I have found it to be incredibly simple. There is no soaking, or swishing in the toilet. When washing newborn diapers, all I do is take off the soiled diaper and toss it into my diaper pail. about every other day I empty the pail into my washing machine, for the two girls it ends up being a small to medium load in my large capacity washer. I wash on hot, with a long cycle. I use just a squirt of Ecostore laundry detergent. Do not give in to the temptation to add more soap...it will not get your diapers cleaner. In fact, it will be difficult to rinse excess detergent out of your diapers, which will make them stinky. Every few loads I will run either an extra wash with no soap or an extra rinse. I then toss the diapers in the dryer and dry as usual. I found that I end up doing LESS baby laundry when using cloth diapers. cloth diapers absorb the runny infant poop before it has a chance to escape the diaper and creep up the back...disposable diapers are not so good at this! For the most part, the twins can stay in one outfit all day!

I'll add some photos later when the girls are up from naps. I'm happy to use cloth diapers as it saves money (especially when diapering twins!), I'm not throwing out bag after bag of soiled diapers each week, and I feel better about putting cloth onto my babies...I cannot imagine wearing paper underwear for several years of MY life!

My Kids Crack Me up!

Today, we're talking about something that made us laugh.

I think that my kids are hilarious.

When Andrew was in second grade, his teacher often played trivia games with the class on Fridays. One week the question was "If young Boy Scouts are called Cub Scouts, what are young Girl Scouts called?" Andrew shot his hand in the air and blurted out..."Fudgies"! He had the right flavor, but the wrong treat!

William, age three, showed up in my kitchen looking like this one day. Both he and big brother Andrew denied that more than one boy was responsible for the "artwork". The funniest part? This was a Saturday afternoon and I had to scrub all of that ink off before church on Sunday!

Or how about Owen, looking at me, super sincerely, and telling me that he should be able to play video games during homework time...since video games improve his reading skills!

I think it is hilarious that Ethan brings a stuffed dog with him every week for Show and Share at school, and he manages to get it to fit the theme, every time, even if it means a name change for his beloved "pets".

Even the girls seem to have a sense of humor. Elizabeth can be screaming in her crib and when I go and pick her up she looks at me with an expression that says "Hi, how are you doing? I'm doing pretty good too!"

It takes a pretty good sense of humor to live in our house, and the kids learn to use and listen for sarcasm pretty early on. I think laughter is one of the things that keep us close!

Seven Quick Takes Friday

  1. According to the Babycenter.com email that I still get, yesterday was the girls due date...and they celebrated their second week of life! I still find myself pinching myself, it is so unbelievable that I have two week old twin girls! The visiting nurse came yesterday to weigh the girls and I am no longer worried about their growth. Elizabeth is 7 pounds 1 ounce, and Emily is 6 pounds, 1 ounce. The funny thing is, when William was 2 weeks old he weighed more than both girls combined! He was 13 pounds and 7 ounces. No wonder I was so tired with William!
  2. Those who follow me on Facebook have surely read that I feel like I've gotten my mom mojo back! After a very long, very trying pregnancy, it actually feels good to do things like clean up the kitchen after breakfast, and keep the laundry under control! Taking a daily shower and wearing something other than pajamas feels great too! I've lost the quickest 32 pounds of my life, and I'm sure that adds to my energy level!
  3. Being a mom to six does not seem so difficult yet. My kids are at such distinctly different stages that it does feel like I'm shuffling two families though. I get the boys off to school in the morning, then focus on babies all day. When the boys come back from school, I'm a big kid mom again, while the boys entertain the babies and I make dinner and help with homework, then I work on getting everyone to bed. Having two babies just makes me feel more efficient! Just think...I could have had all of my kids in three really hard pregnancies instead of five moderately difficult pregnancies!
  4. It is really very cold here in North Dakota. As a result, I'm not even going to attempt to grocery shop with two infants...that is what husbands and grocery delivery is for!
  5. I went to dinner the other night with my old co-workers for a going away meal for one of the nurses. I miss my co-workers, but I don't miss my job. I'll need to make a better effort to keep up with all of them, they were wonderful to spend 12 hours a day with!
  6. I'm already looking forward to doing some really good hiking this summer...I think I went on two hikes this past summer, and I can't say I enjoyed either of them. Of course, since I'll be strapping a baby on my back, I really want to make sure I'm in shape before summer. That will probably give me some incentive to get going with my wii Active again. I think I'm going to reward myself with the More Workouts disc once I actually finish a 30 day challenge...The last time I started a 30 day challenge, I ended up pregnant and sick. Once I felt better I was pregnant with twins and was supposed to stay off my feet! The girls are worth it though!
  7. For my Bismarck readers: I am going to start that women's Bible study I spoke of last week. We'll meet at Holy Cross on Wednesdays, starting next week. We'll meet at 9, so we can be done before the Men's lunch...they get funny if women are hanging around! If you could pop me an email if you think you can attend, that would be great. I'll have toys and videos there for the kids...and of course, there will be coffee!
I'd love to hear what you've been up to this week! And make sure to stop by Conversion Diary for more 7 Quick Takes!
